So you are coming on a residential trip to Thornham?

We are really pleased you are coming on a residential trip to Thornham.  We hope that this page will tell you a bit about what to expect.

The Field Centre is in a little village called Thornham Magna.  It has no shops, no post office, no garage, no street lights, in fact you could say it doesn't have much!  But it is very pretty and very peaceful. It does have lots of countryside, green fields, trees, ponds, birds and animals, if you are quiet you might see a deer if you look out in the early morning.  Or the stars if you look out at night, no street lights means you can see the stars.  It might be very different from where you live.

You will be staying in our log cabins. All the rooms except one has two beds, one has four and all have bunk beds.  Your teachers will decide who sleeps where I expect.

We call our Thornham teachers, tutors, so you can tell the difference between them and your own teachers.  One of our Thornham tutors will meet you in the coach park. It will probably be me, my name is Jean and I teach most of the residential groups.

When you arrive unload your luggage and leave it in the cabins.  We like to get going as soon as possible so ask that you  sort out your rooms after the teaching day. Don't forget to bring your sleeping bag, pillow case and towel will you?    I will give you a little talk about your trip, then off we go.  Your teacher will have arranged what she would like you to do - you may have been told, or it may be a surprise!

You will bring a packed lunch with you for the first day, make sure it is "low impact" please.

When you go back to the cabins at about 4 o'clock you can unpack and sort  yourselves out. You might be able to explore a bit.   You will have your supper in the Forge Cafe.  Charlotte is in charge of the food, she will ask you what you want in your sandwiches for the next day's packed lunch.  Charlotte also runs the gift shop and will tell you when it is a good time to do your shopping if you want to.  Then it is back to the cabins when your teachers may have activities for you.  There is a big grassy area where you can play games, there is a tv but it only plays videos which your teachers might have brought for you - sorry, you will miss your favorite soaps, let's hope you have persuaded someone to tape them for you!

Try and get some sleep!  It is tiring being out in the fresh air all day and I will be ready for your second day expecting you to be full of energy!  Richard will leave your breakfast things in the kitchen of the cabins, so you will need to help clear away and stuff like that.

We hope you have fun.  Do send us lots of pictures of your trip or send us an email or a letter, we love to hear from you.  Or you could leave us a comment on our blog thornham.blogspot.com
